It is only in these cases that it is appropriate to appeal to worldviews, ideologies, power relations, cultural resistances, the unconscious, sociological burdens, or even psychopathology. How can these people believe such irrational things? The simple fact of asking this question and investigating with such a research program creates a complete asymmetry between science and other beliefs. Indeed, in each case, scientific truth ends up emerging by tearing itself away from cultures and circumstances, whereas beliefs remain attached to them. [...] Hence the unavoidable question when reading them: how were we, Westerners, able to invent a form of knowledge so radically original that it escapes all cultural conditions of production?1”1 (Latour, 1983).

Bruno Latour, noting the apparent objectivity of scientific research—as only the sciences can claim access to truth in the modern Western paradigm—questions here the modalities of scientific knowledge production. Are they as exempt from bias as they claim?

The triumph of reason in the Age of Enlightenment allowed the scientific approach to stand as a bulwark against obscurantist religious beliefs and political absolutism, influencing how knowledge would be produced for centuries to come. While Cartesian reason and scientific thought established themselves as privileged access points to truth, the modalities of non-Western thought and knowledge production were branded as irrational and primitive, as shown by Aumônier (2015)2. This dynamic continued into the 19th century with currents of thought such as positivism or scientism, according to which only the rationality of the scientific method could guarantee the reliability of the knowledge produced.

In this context, universities, which were previously dependent on the Church, were reformed and became sites of knowledge production. The education provided there no longer aimed merely to “transmit the elements of a dominant value system3” (Duméry et al., 1999) but intended to support the dynamic of societal progress by fostering research. This correlation between the development of a better understanding of worldly phenomena and scientific and technical progress was challenged in the 20th century as certain disciplines began to contest the uniqueness and objectivity of the scientific method. Philosophy of science, sociology of science, anthropology applied to science and technology, scientometrics, etc., became interested in the cultural conditions influencing scientific knowledge production and the characteristics of research itself. The dominant epistemology was shaken.

In the 1990s, notably with the work of Robert Neel Proctor, a new discipline was born aiming to study the mechanisms of the social construction of ignorance, its maintenance, and its dissemination: agnotology. It distinguishes between phenomena stemming from an intentional versus an unintentional production of ignorance, noting that scientific research does not escape these dynamics. In a context where new research tends to deconstruct the belief in the objectivity of the sciences and questions the unshakable nature of scientific knowledge, agnotology studies the way in which knowledge production is necessarily accompanied by a production of ignorance. Academic research, to this day, is therefore not devoid of biases that participate in generating certain forms of ignorance.

The objective of this study day is to shed light on the mechanisms inherent in the functioning of the university, and more generally of academic research, that participate in an unintentional production of ignorance. Thus, we will leave aside cases of fraud and breaches of scientific integrity that involve modalities of intentional production of ignorance to satisfy personal, political, economic, or careerist interests, etc., to focus on the more subtle and invisibilized biases that help maintain ignorance in the scientific field.

These biases are of various kinds:

“Research bias is “a trend or deviation in the truth of results, inferences, and conclusions in a systematic way that can cause an error in the work. Biases can influence the research design, the collection and interpretation of data, or the communication of results. Although it is difficult or impossible to completely eliminate biases, measures can be taken to identify and minimize the most serious potential sources of bias4” (InterAcademy Partnership, 2016). One can cite selection bias, information bias, analysis bias, sampling bias, procedural bias, response bias, etc. These biases—unintentional and often unconscious—permeate academic research and generate ignorance insofar as they are sources of error on the part of researchers.

Certain methodological biases can, on the contrary, be made conscious by the researcher: they are then at the origin of a learned ignorance, fully self-aware. Although the researcher is aware of the existence of these biases, their primary intention is not to generate ignorance. Let us take, with Emmanuelle Fillion5, the example of medical research, which requires massive statistical power and extreme rigor, forcing the elimination of a certain number of phenomena and certain forms of non-academic knowledge. Thus, research methodologies have blind spots, which stem neither from manipulation nor negligence, but are intrinsic to them and guarantee their rigor.

Academic research also experiences sociological biases (sexist, racist, homophobic, fatphobic, ableist, etc.) which can be assumed to guide the choices made regarding research subjects and influence the recruitment of the people selected to conduct them. Would studies on endometriosis have been so delayed if this disease had affected biological males?

Finally, certain institutional biases generate ignorance through involuntary omission (undone science). The lack of human and financial resources in many research laboratories prevents the deepening of certain issues. Indeed, any research program, since it is limited in time and resources, must focus on certain fields—which present a cultural, commercial, political, or other interest—leaving others to lie fallow. Ignorance is, in this case, a sort of “lost ground6” (Proctor and Schiebinger, 2008).

While we are witnessing, with the development of the internet and social networks, an explosion of disinformation—to the point that some researchers speak of a phenomenon of “post-truth7” (Girel, 2018)—it seems necessary to become aware of the blind spots of the scientific method and academic research, which today hold authority in terms of reliable knowledge production.
